Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS)

One of the most dreaded attacks on a computer system is the denial of service attack.

In this attack type, the attacker exploits a vulnerability in a computer system by flooding it with unwanted traffic which overwhelms the system and ultimately making its resources and services inaccessible to legitimate users.

A distributed denial of service attack is even more catastrophic because if the attacker gains access to one system, appoints it as the DDOS master. This master is used in identifying other connected vulnerable computer systems to gain control over by hacking through their authentication controls.

These computer systems and devices under the control of the attacker are referred to as “bots” or “zombies” while the attacker in control of these bots is also referred to as the “botmaster”.

The botmaster subsequently creates a command-and-control server to command the network of bots. This network of bots is known as a “botnet”.

Botnets may include any number of bots that the botmaster can take control of; botnets with tens or hundreds of thousands of nodes have become so common recently, and with no upper limit to their size.

Once the botnet is built, the attacker will flood the network with traffic created by the compromised devices. Link requests or malformed packets are used to cause them to slow down and refuse legitimate users access to infrastructure and services. It can also result in the entire network crashing and shutting down.

DDoS attacks can pose serious business risks with long-term consequences. Here are some tips to preventing or limiting the effects of a DDOS attack;

  • Have a DDOS response plan by scanning through your system and network in searching for vulnerabilities and patching them appropriately.
